A bolero is essentially a short cropped jacket on the lines of what is worn by matadors. It has a resemblance with the more popular and common shrug which is a cropped cardigan-like garment for women, typically knitted or in lace. A bolero jacket covers less of the body than a formal vest and is worn over a dress or any outfit. Even though a bolero jacket is comparable to a shrug, it is generally made of stiffer materials and just like a shrug meets at one point only.
