The Return of the Fashion wear – Cardigans and Shrugs

The cardigan in its original form was a knitted version of a dressing gown. It has been a go-to garment in cold winter days and has always keept you warm and comfortable. But the cardigan has not been a fashion icon since the 90s when it was worn in a disheveled scruffy way – plus sizes draped over dresses and jeans.
But now, cardigans are back on the catwalks of the fashion capitals of the world, thanks to influencers like Gucci, Prada, and Christopher Lane. Plus size cardigans and shrugs have been an integral part of Gucci’s minimalist aesthetic designs over the past few seasons, worn over midi-length skirts. Prada, a great fan of the cardigan is offering plus sizes to be worn over pencil skirts. And as for Christopher Kane, it is an altogether different ball-game. In recent multiple collections, he has mothballed denim and leather jackets for the slouchy cardigan as the preferred layer over pretty summer dresses. What has worked in favor of the designers is that several young influencers and celebs have endorsed this trend – Alexa Chung, Selena Gomez, and Kate Bosworth to name a few.

How should you wear plus size cardigans and shrugs? To avoid looking very skimpy, wear a cardigan or shrug over straight-leg jeans and a T-shirt. Or for a slim sleek look, tuck the cardigan into high waist trousers. A great winter-wear option is to buy a fine knit piece and belt it over a midi-skirt. Worn over dresses, it adds a look of elegance at parties. Alexa Chung has a beautiful take on plus size cardigans and shrugs. She tucks it into trousers like a blouse.
